Weddings are a big deal. Yet not all weddings need to be big.

In Puerto Rico, less really can mean more. Indeed, this country is perfect for small weddings: from rainforests to coastlines, you’ll find everything for a spectacular micro wedding or elopement. But which one to pick?

Keep reading to know the difference between micro weddings and elopements and how to choose the one that matches your vibe the best.

What is a Micro Wedding?

A micro wedding is exactly what it sounds like: a smaller-scale celebration with all the beauty and intention of a traditional wedding.

Micro Wedding Guest List: Around 20–50 People

  • You still get to walk the aisle, exchange vows, and dance the night away.
  • Think full decor, catering, florals, and maybe even a live band.
  • Ideal for couples who want to keep it meaningful but not massive.
  • A perfect choice for those wanting to celebrate more intimately.

Micro weddings in Puerto Rico often use the island's charming haciendas, boutique hotels, or scenic cliffside venues. Of course, the budget stretches further with fewer people —hello, gourmet dinner and signature cocktails.

What’s an Elopement?

Elopements today are nothing like the stereotype of running off to Vegas (that’s so 20th century). These are raw and adventurous experiences full of adrenaline. If you want to mix love with tons of excitement, this might be your perfect choice.

Elopement Guest List: 0–10 (or just the couple)

  • Emphasis on experience, emotion, and often nature.
  • Minimalist by nature, yet maximalist in meaning.
  • It can include travel, hiking, waterfalls, or intimate vows in a spot that means something to you.

Elopements in Puerto Rico often embrace the wild side of the island — secluded beaches, jungle trails, or mountaintop vistas. The key here is to spice it up and have a meaningful yet out-of-the-ordinary wedding day.

Micro Wedding vs. Elopement: Which One’s Right for You?

When choosing between the two, ask yourself:

  • Do you want to celebrate with loved ones, or keep it between just you two?
  • Is your budget more suited to a curated event or an immersive experience?
  • How much emotional energy do you want to spend on planning?

If you want a stylish celebration without the chaos, a micro wedding might be your thing.

If you're chasing a deeply intentional, cinematic love story, an elopement could be your path.

Either way, it's your moment. Own it.

An Exciting Elopement Story

Debra and Kevin wanted something different.

Debra reached out to us wanting to create an epic elopement film in a remote location in Puerto Rico. She wanted something she could later share with her loved ones back home in New York.

So, we skipped the usual touristy spots and found a secret waterfall over 100 feet tall, surrounded by vibrant mountains. The place could easily be mistaken for a waterfall in Norway. That’s how diverse and magical this island is.

The challenge? A steep 30-minute hike in, and the only way out was ziplining (which was honestly thrilling).

Debra was a little scared at first — she later told us she’s afraid of heights — but even so, she truly wanted to be there. And she definitely braved and owned it.

In short, it was a one-of-a-kind experience.
